Medical Assistant

As part of a team based approach to patient care and under general supervision in an outpatient clinical setting, scheduling services, assists with direct patient care, functions as part of a care team, and performs specialized medical procedures of routine nature, as directed by established clinical policy and procedures.

 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant or achieved Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) with at least 1 year of experience in a primary care setting preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories
  • Very good communication skills
  • Ability to inform patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and provide instruction on proper care and treatment as directed by a provider
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements
  • Ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to established policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures
  • Ability to perform routine invasive procedures, such as venipuncture
  • Ability to schedule appointments and referrals
  • Thoroughly document all communication with patients and/or primary care providers
  • Knowledge of outpatient clinical administrative procedures
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, risk, compliance and infection control standards
  • Knowledge of and assistance with inventory management practices

 

DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES: 

  1. Assist with direct patient care procedures and related tasks as part of the patient care team; room patients, obtain patient histories, take vital signs, review and update required documentation.
  2. Perform procedures including, but not limited to: phlebotomy, nasal and throat swabs, vaccinations, in-house laboratory testing, wound care and dressing changes under provider direction or per established policies and protocols.
  3. Advise patients on specified medical issues as directed by a provider.  Schedule follow up appointments and manage referrals. 
  4. Monitor patient appointments and Nurse Visits as able.  Assist with or coordinate office functions and participate in quality improvement and other compliance activities.
  5. Enter orders in medical chart as directed for laboratory, imaging, pending medications and referrals. Review and update Health Maintenance in medical chart. 
  6. Clean and maintain supplies in exam rooms and other clinical areas; monitor refrigerators and equipment as assigned. Practice safety, environmental and/or infection control methods.
  7. Supervise and orient new clinical employees, students and volunteers.  If bilingual, assist with translation as indicated.
  8. Provide care vouchers for patients as indicated.
  9. May participate in clinical outreach activities.
