Medical Assistant/LPN/RN

GENERAL SUMMARY: Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a Physician’s Assistant or Physician. Interviews patients, assists with procedures, and records information on patients' charts. May be required to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Typically reports to a supervisor, manager or physician.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    1. Adapts communication style to each patient’s ability to understand; Collects basic subjective and objective data as directed by the licensed health care professional and records in the patient medical record.  Reports data to the licensed health care provider.
    2. Assists the doctor/physician with all examinations and procedures with predictable outcomes routinely provided in the clinic.
    3. Ensures patient is appropriately prepared for care encounter.  Prepares/obtains patient medical records and other information/documentation pertinent to patient encounter.
    4. Schedules and provides patient instruction(s) for tests, treatments and hospital admissions, following correct insurance protocol.  (Ie. Pre-certification, referrals, chart documentation, etc.)
    5. Ensures appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to the above.
    6. Maintains patient flow in accordance with time of appointment or walk-in status in such a manner to avoid delays for the doctor/physician and undue waiting for patients.
    7. Recognizes and responds to verbal and non-verbal communication.
    8. Retrieves messages and responds to calls from patients, pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical offices by use of telephone and computer as delegated by doctors, physicians or supervisor.
    9. Returns authorized messages from provider as delegated and documents information provided in the patient record based on established protocols.
    10. Demonstrates competency in tasks and skills required for this position.
    11. Keeps the exam rooms clean, disinfected, and stocked with supplies needed for examinations.
    12. Maintains efficient, organized, and clean work areas.
    13. Disposes of needles and other sharps in biohazard sharp containers according to procedures provided by the clinic.
    14. Understands and follows orders and communicates results to appropriate doctors, physicians or supervisor.
    15. Communicates with patients, families, and other professionals in a courteous manner.
    16. Understands and demonstrates compliance with HIPAA regulations.
    17. Ensures priority care is provided to patients in an emergency situation.
    18. Performs any other duties that may be assigned by doctors, physicians or supervisor.

    SPECIFICATIONS:

    This is a general description that covers all levels/grades of the job.  Level/grade assignments are determined by the attached leveling guidelines.  Minimum qualifications are outlined below

    Demonstrates a proven commitment to provide excellent patient care and models skills consistent with Dermatology Specialists of Omaha’s Core Values. Analytical skills necessary to evaluate patients/providers requests, prepare patients for procedures/ doctors visits. Proven knowledge of skills/position, thorough knowledge of regulatory, policy and compliance issues. Excellent skills in interpersonal communication, time management. Ability to evaluate problems and resolve issues appropriately. Certain educational requirements needed.

    Clinic Staff I

    Medical Assistant/ Certified Medical Assistant Certification or LPN with limited/no experience

    Education/Certifications or Licensure

    • Some college or Associate Degree (A.A.) and/or specialized training or certification and/or successful completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program/School. Certification or registration required within 6 months of hire.
    • CMA Requires active certification- as a Certified Medical Assistant by AAMA or a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing.

    Certifications/Licensure(s) required for MA or CMA

    • BLS or BLS certification is required upon hire-  Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following:  American Red Cross:  CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute:  CPR, PRO, must say Professional Level-with AED and American Heart Association:  Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
    • Medication Aide- Registration from State of Nebraska is required or must be obtained within 90 days of employment.

    ·  Performs tasks and duties under general supervision, following company policies and procedures. Reports to a supervisor but has some independent judgment and decision-making, forwards decisions outside approval authority

     

    Internal & External Interactions

    • Regular and substantial contact with others. Contacts usually involve discussions related to patients and patient care, may include presentations, discussions with patients, clinic staff, doctors or other clinic employees.
    • Regular contact with patients, general public, visitors, and vendors.
    • This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. 

     

    Working Conditions

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 20 pounds Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as medical equipment, needles, extreme temperatures, chemicals, fumes, gases, loud noises, dirt, dust, smoke, etc. Use of computer and medical equipment on a regular basis.
