Guest Services-Part-Time

Stephen Center has served homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha since 1984 with the mission to partner with the community, families, and individuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty.  The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing offerings provide safe and secure housing while individuals and families complete an assessment of permanent housing options. All Stephen Center residents have access to dual diagnosis support services via the HERO addiction/recovery program. 100% of Stephen Center shelter supportive housing participants are living in poverty.  Housing transition support identifies poverty barriers that may impact one’s ability to achieve or maintain permanent housing through case management, life skills and behavioral health services. Stephen Center serves approximately 250 people daily in all programs.  

 

Purpose: The Stephen Center Emergency Shelter Guest Services is responsible for the care and oversight of the clients residing in the shelter.  The staff has the opportunity to direct clients by assisting them with questions, problems, and emergencies.  Other duties include maintaining accurate logs, filing out incident reports and other necessary paperwork.


Hours: Monday - Friday 4 - 9 pm with flexibility for on-calls and/or additional hours.

Starting wage: $13.50/hour


Key Accountabilities:

Advocate on behalf of the clients in addition to addressing the needs of the clients including but not limited to medical and dental appointments, transportation, mental health referrals, job leads, etc.


Monitor and maintain appropriate client behavior using shelter rules as guidelines.  Initiate appropriate consequences as necessary.


Monitor and log client’s medication including counting medication upon arrival and monitoring daily intake.  Update medication logs weekly.


Keep hallways and rooms clean and orderly.  Assist/direct clients to follow through with chores.


Answer clients and agency questions.


Answer incoming calls, distribute messages for clients.


Keep up to date and accurate records of current clients0


Inform clients of exit dates in addition to collecting exit information upon departure.


Accurately maintain and monitor ban list.

Generate incident reports as necessary.

Clearly and accurately communicate with Administrative Office regarding bed availability, client count and client intakes.

Contact and coordinate emergency personnel when necessary.

Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of clients in a diverse community.


Attention to detail.


Resourceful, team-oriented, self-sufficient, and self-motivated.


Ability to negotiate effectively (conflict resolution experience).


Professional appearance and manner.


Proficient with MS Office and general office equipment.


Previous shelter experience helpful. 


Comfort in dealing with emergencies.


Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Ability to be flexible with scheduling if necessary.


CPR certified preferred or willing to be certified within 6 months of hire.

Conducts self in a manner of professionalism that is conducive to recovery from mental illness, co-occurring disorders and overall wellness, including a minimum of one year of continuous sobriety if in recovery, from the substance for which you are in recovery.

Abides by all specific program and Agency procedures, policies, and requirements.
